Fields not eligible for transfer waiver; not transferring to SFA

Suspended TCU defensive end Devonte Fields will not be transferring to Stephen F. Austin as announced, after a TCU committee ruled he was ineligible to receive a transfer waiver, the school announced Friday.

Denying the waiver means Fields would have to sit out his first year at SFA, the university said in a statement.

The TCU committee declared that Fields' violation of the student honor code warranted his suspension from the school. After that decision was made, Fields decided he would not enroll at SFA.

Fields announced on his Twitter account on Wednesday that he was leaving TCU to join Stephen F. Austin, which is a Football Championship Subdivision program. SFA confirmed the transfer of the Big 12 preseason defensive player of the year on Thursday, with the intention of having him join the Lumberjacks immediately, but that plan changed less than 24 hours later.

Fields was suspended by TCU last month after he surrendered to authorities on a misdemeanor assault warrant, stemming from allegations he threatened his ex-girlfriend and punched her.

Fields recorded 57 tackles, 10 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss in his two seasons as a Horned Frog. He played in only three games in 2013, because of a one-game suspension and a season-ending foot injury.
