Tuesday morning, Norm and Donovan kicked off the show discussing the latest loss suffered by the wildcard-seeking Texas Rangers. The Rangers suffered a 15-9 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Norm talked about his growing concern over the status of Rangers’ ace Cole Hamels. The veteran pitcher has struggled over his last five starts, and has seen a very steady decline in his numbers over the last three seasons.
After Norm and Donovan’s weekly visit with Rick “the Goose” Gosselin, Norm and Donovan discussed last night’s developments from the first annual NBA Awards show. Dirk Nowitzki received the Twyman-Stokes Best Teammate award, voted on by the players. Nowitzki is up for free agency this summer and seemed to shoot down speculation of his retirement after this coming season.
Dirk Nowitzki was quoted as saying “Hopefully I can play a couple more years”. Norm and Donovan agreed that Nowitzki may very well be able to play for several more years, as he ties the record for most seasons with one team next season with 20. The award is names after Maurice Stokes and Jack Twyman.
Stokes was a star in the NBA during the 1950’s. After suffering a freak injury during a game that knocked him unconscious for several minutes, Stokes somehow finished the game, and after playing another game several nights later, Stokes entered a coma for several weeks and then was rendered a quadriplegic. Twyman became Stokes’ legal guardian and handled his medical expenses, mail, and took care of him until his death in 1970.
Eric Gordon was named Sixth Man of the Year, Mike D’Antoni was named Coach of the Year, Malcom Brogdon was named Rookie of the Year, and Russell Westbrook was named Most Valuable Player.
