Norm and D Invasion 6/22/17
Thursday morning, Norm and Donovan kicked things off discussing the highly-anticipated NBA draft set to take place this afternoon. Norm pointed out a possible trade that may involve the Mavericks tonight. Yesterday, the Mavericks and the Minnesota Timberwolves discussed a trade that would send guard Wesley Matthews and the ninth pick in tonight’s draft to the T-Wolves in exchange for guard Ricky Rubio and the seventh pick in the draft.
Donovan spoke of his return from his vacation in Phoenix. Average temperatures in the area have skyrocketed well past 110 degrees, and Donovan talked of his time playing golf in the smoldering heat. Norm then updated the audience on the reasoning for the Mavs-Wolves trade being shelved for the moment. The issue is not a disparity in salary, rather the Timberwolves cannot trade first round picks in consecutive years. However, the team can make the trade after they make a certain selection in the draft. In other words, if the trade is agreed to, then the Wolves may be picking for the Mavericks, and vice versa.
Norm told a heart-warming story of the late Tony Liscio, who passed away last week at the age of 76. Liscio played in the NFL in the 60’s for the Dallas Cowboys, and was a starting offensive lineman for the Cowboys in the Ice Bowl. Liscio retired in 1970, but later was convinced by coach Tom Landry to come back. Liscio then started at left tackle for the 1971 Super Bowl champion Cowboys. Liscio passed away last week after a long battle with ALS.
Norm and Donovan closed out the show talking about the Rangers, and the idea of retaining ace Yu Darvish. The team hopes to re-sign him in the offseason, despite various trade rumors and the possibility of adding a multitude of draft choices and prospects in exchange for the Japanese starter.
