NFL Teams Making Heisman Trophy Winners Scarce In Final Roster Cuts

With the end of the NFL preseason, teams have to get down to 53 players by 5 pm Dallas time today, and several notable names have already appeared on the cut list.

Most notably, the New England Patriots have released quarterback Tim Tebow, who was on his third NFL team in 18 months…Previous stints with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets proved less than stellar, and the former Heisman Trophy winner could be done.

Another former Heisman winner looking for a job today is Matt Leinart, who was cut from the Buffalo Bills after being signed Sunday as an injury replacement for E.J. Manuel and Kevin Kolb, who the Bills placed on the Injured Reserve list on Friday with concussion issues, possibly ending his career.

Other notable names released today include fomer Longhorns QB Vince Young, cut by the Packers; CB Antoine Winfield, released by Seattle after being released by Minnesota earlier this summer; QB Jimmy Clausen, cut by the Carolina Panthers and CB Marcus Trufant, let go by Jacksonville.

Once the players clear waivers, they can be re-signed to teams' rosters or practice squads. The NFL regular season starts on Thursday night when the Denver Broncos play host to the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.
