| Group Punishment DOES work... |
|
|
I wish I could call in and plug the holes those previous two callers had in their arguments.
I say group punishment DOES work on any level and it's really simple.
Say for instance Bradie James comes to practice 30 mins late. You punish the whole team... or if you want to narrow it down, the entire defensive unit.
Players might say it's unfair but guess what? LIFE is unfair. What this form of punishment does is build cohesion and better yet, makes each player accountable for their teammates. Which is a plus for an organization. This way, Bradie James in the example has the entire defensive unit urging, coercing, pleading, or threatening him to get his act together. And this causes the teammates of the offending player to assist the coaching staff by assuming the role of disciplinarian.
It's better to have 20 some odd players discipline a player than one coach.
Yeah Demarcus Ware would be pissed at Coach Phillips for having to do windsprints/suicides/whatever grueling punishment he had to do... BUT he'd be MORE pissed at Bradie James for screwing up (as well as other defensive players)... and I BETCHA he won't be late again. You'd have Marcus Spears calling him 2 hours before practice to make sure he gets up... you'd have Jay Ratliff making sure Bradie James gets enough sleep the night before.
What you suggested as fining the player and putting their names on the lockerroom in the chalkboard... yeah it may be embarrasing a little... but IT WONT FIX THE PROBLEM! And it won't embarrass the player to the point to where he focuses on fixing the bad habits. In short, increasing fines and player ridicule in the lockerroom won't fix the problem... just make the offending player the butt of a few jokes.
Group punishment is the way to go. You'd have the entire team acting as a cohesive unit on AND off the field...and that's the ONE thing that keeps this team from winning!
Usually I agree with your opinions but on this one you're way off Norm.

i agree since the original group punishment aspect began in the military and around evey corner there is another football / military analogical cliche... im sure gribbs will agree, its not just in Full Metal Jacket, but everyday boot camp consists of group punishent. funny visual though: the whole team giving a blanket party to TO :-)... TRAMPLE THE WEAK, HURDLE THE DEAD! |

Why not just keep them out of the next game?
If you really want to make a point... keep them out of the next game for a quarter or something.
Showing up late = not wanting to play. |

| Being a former Marine. Group punishment does work. the reason is because it puts pressure on the other people of the team. The last thing a person wants is to think that the problem is them. |

I say keep the whole team out for a quarter.... No wait, they don't play at least one quarter a game anyway. (OYO) DumernRocks
